Import SVG files

Our SVG file import feature allows users to easily create custom shape libraries inside Lucidchart.

SVGs are a high-quality vector format, so the shapes stay smooth no matter how large or small they are. Just like Lucidchart shapes, you can draw or connect lines directly to a SVG object, as well as change its fill color and gradient.

Note: Since SVG import for Lucidchart is still in beta, it is undergoing continual improvement. We rely on you to let us know what needs to be fixed. Please report any problems and include a copy of your original SVG file.

Importing SVG files

SVG files can be downloaded from the Internet or created in programs like Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, and SVG-edit.

Follow these steps to successfully import SVG files to a custom shape library:

  1. Open the Shape Manager by clicking ‘More Shapes’ while you’re in the editor.

  2. Click the SVG button in the top left corner of the Shape Manager.

  3. Select an existing shape library to import the files to or create a new custom shape library.

  4. Select the SVG file(s) to upload. Hold Shift to select a range of files, or hold Control (Command for Mac) to select several files at once. Note: Please limit uploads to no more than 100 files at a time.

  5. Click ‘Import’ to begin the import process. Failed uploads will appear with an error message. If a file fails to upload, the impot process will halt and no additional files will be added.

  6. Imported files will appear in the selected library.

  7. To add more shapes to an existing library, you can do any of the following:

    • Select the library inside the Shape Manager and click the ‘+’ icon
    • Click the SVG button
    • Click the ‘+’ button inside the toolbox

Managing SVG files and libraries

From the Shape Manager

  1. From inside the editor, click the 'More Shapes' button and turn on your desired custom shape libraries. Selected shape libraries will now display in the toolbox.

  2. To manage a shape library, right-click its name from the toolbox and select 'Manage Library'.

  3. From here, you can turn team sharing off/on. Right-click individual shapes to rename, move, or edit.

From the toolbox

  1. Right-click the title of the shape library to open the library in the Shape Manager
  2. Right-click individual shapes to rename, move, or edit.

Best Practices

  • Ensure that each SVG file is an individual shape, not a collection of shapes
  • Please limit upload to 100 files at a time
  • Limit each file size to 150 kilobytes

Errors during import

Your imported SVG has an error when we were able to successfully import the shape but some of the properties might not appear the same as the original. Here are the most likely causes for failure.

  • Text objects in the file
  • Elliptical curves
  • Advanced gradients

Failed to import SVG

There are a few things that certainly cause SVG imports to fail. Please review the following suggestions to ensure a successful import. If you still cannot successfully import your file then please submit a ticket with the file attached and we'll be happy to help!

  • Make sure each file you selected has .svg at the end of the filename
